Oxy-Acetylene Welding DVD Review

Oxy-Acetylene Welding DVD
Average Reviews:

This video contains a broad array of good basic information on gas welding. Especially usefull are the clear and very close up shots of the weld pool during welding. I would have liked more on achieving full penetration welds as well as inspection and testing of completed welds. The production budget was obviously pretty low but then again this videos purpose isn't to dazzle but to convey useful information which it does pretty well. Be warned that Northern's shipping for this tiny little item is truely exorbitant!

Bernzomatic 19527 ST900D Mini Torch Review

Bernzomatic 19527 ST900D Mini Torch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Short version: The 3 tips provided last a maximum of 10 hours use and must be replaced. They are not sold individually, You must buy a "kit" with all 3 tips ($15 each). The kits are not sold most places that sell the torch. This is a throwaway tool that is not likely to last the 30 hours that your propane tank does....
Longer version:
This is my second Bernzomatic solder tool. The other was a small butane model whose filler receptacle failed. Sadly, Bernzomatic does not provide any repair or replacement parts for this. So, when I saw the ST900D, I was not too sure about another Bernzomatic. But, given the features, the use of a user supplied propane take and interchangeable tips, I decided to go for it. When I got my torch from Amazon, I read the instruction booklet. I was surprised to see that the tips were stated to have a catalytic element that under optimal condition may last as much as 10 hours use. Since, they make a big deal about it going 30 hours on a single tank of gas, you might think it would be mentioned that your tips won't last that long. I assumed that I could buy a box of the solder tips... but no. The tips are only sold as a kit and that is if you can find it. The is no mention of any of this on the Bernzomatic website. I get the sense that Bernzomatic doesn't actually have any interest in supporting their products. Buy it, use it a few times, throw it away and buy another one. I will be looking for another supplier and may well send the ST900D back to Amazon.

Covell Welding and Metalworking DVD - Working with Tubing, Model# 1000-21 DVD Review

Covell Welding and Metalworking DVD - Working with Tubing, Model# 1000-21 DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ron Covell is an absolute master at metal working. I was a little hesitant to pay 30 bucks for this thing but after watching it, I know it was worth every penny. I am a moderate metal worker and understand basic concepts. Ron delves deeply into the entire experience from bending and forming brake lines and fuel lines to bending large heavy tubes. It was made very cheaply and there are no frills added. Just him, a white background, a workbench and a vice. The camera probably came from walmart and was recorded on a tape. Nothing close to digital. If you want to learn, buy it. If you want to be wow'ed by this guys talent, buy it. If you are looking for something that would be on SPEEDTV HD, this ain't for you.

GMAW (MIG) Welding 1 DVD Review

GMAW (MIG) Welding 1 DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD is a short, yet clear and informative, introduction to GMAW welding. I heartily recommend that anyone knew to GMAW welding buy this DVD. However, do not buy it expecting to actually learn how to weld.
This DVD really only delves into the background of the process and how the equipment works. I was a bit disappointed to find that it didn't cover anything more than that, such as what a good weld looks like, what a bad weld looks like, technigues for avoiding errors, and so on. Unfortunately, such a DVD doesn't appear to exist anywhere and so trial-and-error appear to be your only instructor unless you're willing to pay to actually go to a welding school (which you should if you're looking to welding as an occupation)

Miller Diversion DVD with TIG Welding For Dummies Review

Miller Diversion DVD with TIG Welding For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DVD only runs 15-20 minutes total, half of which is introduction and commercials. It provides very little useful information. The Miller machine it is based on is an ultra-simple TIG welder with virtually no user-selectable options ("turn on the gas, select AC or DC, set material thickness and you are ready to weld!" as the video puts it). Don't expect to learn anything about setting up a more capable machine or much of anything else for that matter. You can easily find much better information on line and save the $[...] (check out [...] for example). Don't bother with this video.
