(More customer reviews)I bought this as my first welder because it had great reviews online...I wanted one to fix the floors on a vintage car. Purists scoff at flux welding but this thing produces great welds to my untrained eyes. Made in the US it came well packed with a detailed manual, spare tips and extra grounding clamp. The metal case is solid with a nice look.
I put two pieces of thick metal on my workbench and pressed the trigger. My first welds were sloppy, but after about 10 minutes I figured it out: Read the manual or watch videos online on how to hold the gun...the angle you hold the tip is the secret as does precise panning across the joint. I also bought one of the autodarkening helmets which was worth every penny, I can't imagine how people used the old helmets for decades. You should also get yourself some of the heavy leather gloves. Very satisfying.

The MIG technique of welding is considerably better but adjusting the intensity seems to be suspect, maybe more use will prove the product meets expectations. So far this product is close to being a failure.

(More customer reviews)This is a decent welder. It is stable at the amperage levels. It can be used on several applications. Very easy to use and understand for the intermediate welder, but could use more instruction on the guaging for steel welding. It performs well, although I wouldn't reccomend hard wiring because it decreases its mobility for alternate applications. All in all, I am pleased with this product and would reccomend it for someone who knows how to weld or a beginner who wants to learn.

115 Volt WELD-PAK 100 Wire Feed Welder Needs No Gas Ready to Use Review

(More customer reviews)This package comes complete and ready to go for steel. Don't forget that you'll need another ~$120 before you're welding Aluminum (I don't have this accessory).
Caution: the video that comes with the welder is heavy in safety (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but very light in the technique of welding. A welding book would be a good addition.
The mask that comes with it is a happy medium, easy to see when working but also easy on your eyes.
I've welded up to 1/8" steel with good penetration. Thin walled tubes so far have proven elusive (burning holes in them) but I'm sure it's my technique rather than the welder.
Lincoln-Electric is a great company, I hear they tret their employees very well. Good to buy a US made product.

Hobart 500414 115-Volt, 135 Amp Handler 135 Welder Review

(More customer reviews)This welder is a good choice for the hobbiest/homeowner. I have used this to weld up to 1/4" mild steel and have very good success with it. The unit takes 115V so power is easy. The welder comes with the gauges and fittings required (minus bottle) for mig welding making for a very complete kit. I weld only steel and have not used the shielding gas components. The duty cycle prevents continous welding in all but the first setting, but with the time it takes for set up, moving around and such, I have only run into the duty cycle limit once and that was on the highest setting. Forced air cooling reduces the wait time. I have used stick and wire welders. I much favor the wire feed because the welding is much more consistant. People with easy access to 220 volt power may wish to go that way, but this is a very capable 115V unit. Things I like: Long gun cord, 115V, easy to use, uses standard, easily found consumables (wire, tips, etc.), comes complete with gas components (minus bottle), well built, easy wire loading. Improvements: still looking. Duty cycle will hamper production applications (true for all 115V machines) but the homeowner/farmer will be satisified.

(More customer reviews)If you are looking for a great welder that can handle small projects, this is perfect for you. It works fine on a standard outlet in your home and I have yet to trip a breaker. I have welded small strips of metal and pieces of steel that are up to 1/4 inch with no problems. The main thing to keep in mind is that you will be going through alot of rods because there are only 2 types that work with this welder. 1/16th and 5/64th. There is also a single mode switch that allows you to adjust your power from "low" or "high". Consider carefully what you will need this for and if you do not anticipate welding 1/2 steel plate or industrial strength bonds, I would suggest picking this up. Get yourself an auto-darkening helmet, you will be amazed how much better your welds will be. Enjoy!
