(More customer reviews)Finally I am getting serious about metalworking (as a hobby) and recently bought a Hobart IronMan 230 MIG welder (I have a stick welder and a small MIG.) I have always had trouble starting my bead with a standard helmet - I would have my electrode or gun positioned and then I would flip down my helmet and invariably move the rod/gun out of position. I've wanted an AD helmet for some time and finally decided to pull the trigger on this one.
I was steered to ArcOne helmets by a professional welder who made a post on a popular welding forum - he uses an ArcOne on job sites because he doesn't want to subject his expensive helmet to the rigors of a job site. I think he considers this a throw-away helmet, when it gets too splattered up or damaged, he buys another one.
Since this is my first AD helmet, I have no comment about it being better or worse than others in this price range. I can comment on the physical properties of the helmet - it is very lightweight and the head band and other mechanical aspects of the helmet are excellent. My hat size is 7 1/8" and the headband felt very good - not too tight as to squeeze my brains out ;-) but tight enough. The headband on my standard helmet (a Lincoln I think) was either too tight or too loose and much heavier.
The auto-darkening aspect seemed to work quite well, but there are no lens adjustments on this helmet - my next helmet will have variable shade levels. After welding for three or four hours, I had some eye strain, but I'm not certain it was due to the somewhat slower response time of this lens, or due to concentrating/focusing on welding.
Also consider the highly regarded 50 buck or so Harbor Freight AD helmet. I think I'll move up to a little better helmet in the future (when the plastic lens cover on this one gets splattered up), but this one is serving me well for now.
If you are welding with a non-auto darkening helmet, you don't know what you are missing. Getting an AD helmet was a significant step forward for my welding.
